Day walking near Clecy
I am suggesting this day because you can see more of
these hills walking than cycling, and if you simply go there and
back on the cycleway you miss out on some spectacular scenery. The walk
I did, about 6 miles with a few steep uphills, can easily be done in
half a day, leaving you time to hang out near Pont du Vey (you can go
kayaking on the river if you want another activity). There are some
very nice, good value restaurants along the river upstream of the Clecy
side of Pont du Vey.
For the walk, I suggest simply following this Alltrails route
. You can pick it up from the cycleway just above Pont du Vey, and
follow it anticlockwise. You quickly get up high onto the surrounding
hills, with great views of the viaduct and countryside. Further on, it
takes you round the arc of high hills that you've seen from the valley.
If you want to make it shorter, I suggest return along the (very quiet)
road (D133a) from the place marked as Le Corps du Sel on the map. After
this you're pretty much committed to the whole thing, as you'll be
walking above the top of the rockface, and the only shortcuts down are
very steep. But spread over a few hours, doing the whole route is not
too demanding, and the views from the top of the hills are certainly
worth it.
